Horses are prey animals that pay particular attention to their surroundings to survive. They key in on body language and read facial expressions. They can tell your heart rate and respiration from a few feet away and regulate each by living in herds. The herd has a social hierarchy with a top and a bottom. They live in the present and aren't concerned about the past or future. To connect with a horse you have to be present, authentic and communicate clearly. Being consistent and understanding how your energy affects them builds trust and is the first step in a healthy relationship.
I am one of the few mental healthcare providers in the United States trained in this protocol. Through animal-assisted experiences, the client progresses through the eight phases of EMDR therapy. EA-EMDR was created by Sarah Jenkins as an annualized, phased, trauma treatment model based on EMDR therapy, an established research-based standard. By using this scaled approach, practitioners are partnering with the horses as sentient beings, supported by training, proper qualifications, ethical conduct and a keen awareness of their welfare.
I work primarily with adults struggling with the anxiety and depression resulting from complex trauma (PTSD). I hold couples workshops focusing on relationships and work with groups looking to tackle organizational or leadership challenges. Individual counseling sessions range from $100 to $175 per 50 minute session, depending on the venue. The Couples Workshop is a set fee of $700 per couple for four sessions scheduled over four consecutive weeks. Group work is priced based upon goals, objectives and whatever deliverables are agreed upon. I'm a private-pay provider and do not take insurance.

I believe that counseling is not for everyone, but has the potential to unlock perspectives that can change a person's trajectory towards a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
Gabriel, a Bernese Mountain Dog, is part of my practice, working as a certified therapy dog and a volunteer. He's called on to provide comfort and help promote healing in the community.
I have a holistic view about counseling, promoting the idea of mind, body, and spirit. I think you need to align all three as best you can to expect good mental health and to live well.
